A Weird (but GOOD) Thing Happened the Other Day

The other day, when I was mopping my bedroom, Danny Gokey's "Tell Your Heart to Beat Again" started playing. At first I thought it was Alexa, but I wasn't talking, so I didn't know why she'd suddenly start playing music. It turned out to be the CD in my alarm clock. I was across the room, so I didn't hit anything to make it start playing. I love that song ... it's so appropriate for my life right now ... so I let it play.

By the time I finished mopping my bedroom and bathroom, "I Can Only Imagine" by Mercy Me was playing. I requested that song to be played at Davy's funeral. It was the last song they played before excusing us.

I was going to let the CD finish playing, but as soon as I walked out of the room, the CD stopped.

"Tell Your Heart To Beat Again" by Danny Gokey

You're shattered
Like you've never been before
The life you knew
In a thousand pieces on the floor
And words fall short in times like these
When this world drives you to your knees
You think you're never gonna get back
To the you that used to be

Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday's a closing door
You don't live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you've been
And tell your heart to beat again

Beginning
Just let that word wash over you
It's alright now
Love's healing hands have pulled you through
So get back up, take step one
Leave the darkness, feel the sun
Cause your story's far from over
And your journey's just begun

Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday's a closing door
You don't live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you've been
And tell your heart to beat again

Let every heartbreak
And every scar
Be a picture that reminds you
Who has carried you this far
'Cause love sees farther than you ever could
In this moment heaven's working
Everything for your good

Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday's a closing door
You don't live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you've been
And tell your heart to beat again
Your heart to beat again
Beat again

Oh, so tell your heart to beat again

I'm All For Cutsie ... but

If I were a man and walked into this kitchen, I'd run out of the house screaming! And here's a horrifying thought ... if her kitchen looks like this, what do you suppose her bedroom looks like?!!

One Year Ago Today

Thing 2 called around 8:15pm and said Davy was at the hospital in emergency, that he had punched a windows and severed the artery in his right bicep. By the time I got to the hospital, he was in surgery.

At 11:30, the surgeon came out and told us they were able to repair the artery with a vein from his forearm. Blood flow had been restored and he had a pulse in that arm again. They couldn't do anything about the severed muscles and nerves ... that would require surgery from a specific type of surgeon in Louisville. He wasn't out of the woods, and there was still a possibility he would lose his arm, but for the time being, things were stable.

The next day, Davy was transferred to Louisville for surgery. Luckily, they were able to find the nerves and connect them together with cadaver nerves, and they were able to sew his muscles back together. The prognosis was good as long as he followed doctor's orders, but the pain was more than he could stand.

I spent the night with him in Louisville and listened to him cry all night due to the pain. There was nothing I could do. I tried to soothe him, but he was in no mood to be soothed, so I just had to lay there and listen to him cry and beg for something for the pain. With the opiate crisis, pain relief is hard to find these days ... even in a hospital.

His arm was wrapped from shoulder to fingertips, so we couldn't see the wound. At one of his doctor appointments, to get the staples removed, we got some pictures and finally saw the extent of the damage.

They gave him a brace that he had to wear 24/7 to keep his elbow in a certain position. Flexing his arm could cause the muscle in his bicep to tear. Sewing that, they said, was like sewing two pieces of steak together. It required total rest on those muscles until they had healed.

This crisis was just one in a long line of crises in Davy's life, but he pulled through all of them. Like most young men his age, he thought he was invincible ... and we were beginning to believe it, too. He was like a cat with nine lives!

As the months wore on, he astonished his doctors with his progress, but no one was certain he would ever gain the strength back in his hand. I didn't believe that at all, and I told him so. He was young and strong ... he could do anything he set his mind to. I told him to just keep doing the exercises the therapists gave him and I was positive he would regain full use of his hand.

Sadly, ten months after that accident, he was killed by a hit and run driver on I-69 South. We laid him to rest on his 24th birthday. I still can't believe he's gone. After all he went through, and all he overcame, to die alone on a highway seems beyond cruel ... and all because whoever hit him didn't want to get in trouble. Because they didn't stop, he was ran over again. I hope the person that hit him never knows a moment's peace for the rest of their lives.

This Song is my Mantra

I wake up every day and realize anew that my son is gone forever. I believe everything happens for a reason, that God has a plan, but for the life of me, I can't imagine how taking my son could benefit anyone or anything.

I am apologetically a Child of God, clinging to my faith and His word with everything in me, praying for answers and relief from the pain that consumes my every waking moment. I don't know how people without faith make it through a normal day, much less how they navigate through the storms of life.

Davy was a Christian, so I know I will see him again, and all the questions I have will be answered. But in the meantime, I just have to hang on ... often by my fingernails ... and know God didn't take my son just to be cruel or to punish me.

When I'm overwhelmed, which is often, I repeat the chorus of this song ... Thy will be done, Thy will be done, Thy will be done ...

A Rusty Apple

I took a walk with Thing 2 the other day and found a flat rusty metal apple lying in the street. I thought it was pretty cool and picked it up, not having a clue as to what I would do with it. I decided to hang it above a hook in my kitchen. I like it!

(And yes, I know the pictures of the grandbabies are sideways. I plan on replacing them with correctly oriented photographs.)

Homemade Playdough

When my kids were little, they were absolutely thrilled when they woke up from their naps to a new batch of homemade playdough!

I've been intending to make playdough for my grandbabies (for about a year), and kept forgetting. I was in the pantry the other day and saw the salt I bought to do this, so I sat that and food coloring next to the stove to remind me. Last Tuesday I finally made orange, green, blue, and lavender ... which doesn't look very lavendery in the picture, but it does "in person".

The older two are at the age where they adore playing with playdough. The youngest would only eat it, so the poor little guy can only lust after it right now, but it won't be long before the three of them are sitting at their little table making all kinds of amazing things together.

This is the Little Boy I Remember

Davy was the epitome of Newton's First Law of Motion. It states that "A body at rest will remain at rest unless an outside force acts on it, and a body in motion at a constant velocity will remain in motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an outside force." Davy was a body in motion at a constant velocity!

His little boy isn't quite as busy as Davy was, but he does love playing on his Daddy's skateboard :)

His favorite thing to do with his Daddy was to sit on the skateboard with him and ride down one of the neighbor's driveway. It is just steep enough to get some speed going without being so steep you can get out of control.

Christmas 2015

This print is something I wanted to buy for Davy for years, but it was expensive enough that I kept putting it off. I finally did buy it for him for Christmas 2015. He didn't take it with him when he moved out. When it came to faith, he was unequally yoked. I can only assume that's why he didn't take it with him. A non-Christian likely wouldn't allow this to be hung in their home.

It is now one of the first things you seen when you enter my house. I wish that Davy was still alive and this was hanging in his house ... and that he felt the Lord's love every time he glanced at it.

I Am ...

In fifth grade, each student is required to write a soliloquy of sorts. The teacher provided an example of how it should be written and each student wrote their own. Davy's was the only one that followed the formula, made sense, and was eloquently written. None of the other students came even remotely close to the perfection of Davy's

When I saw it, I told the teacher I wanted it. He said he wanted to keep all of them. I told him I really wanted it ... that I loved it and wanted to frame it. I beat him down until he gradually gave in and let me have it.

The girls both wrote one in fifth grade. I still have theirs, but they don't make much sense. It wasn't until I saw Davy's that I even realized what I was reading was their attempt at the same thing.

It remains one of my most prized possessions.

I am ...

I am a wrestler and a winner.
I wonder if I can be a state champion.
I hear the audience cheering.
I see the ref.
I want to get a pin.
I am a wrestler and a winner

I pretend I don't care about winning.
I feel strong.
I touch the mat.
I worry about losing.
I cry win (when) I lose sometimes.
I am a wrestler and a winner.

I understand I will win.
I say I can do it.
I dream of going to state.
I hope I win.
I am a wrestler and a winner.
